Hiring a personal stylist is just like any other relationship - a lot has to do with chemistry. If you're here reading my blog, you probably saw something somewhere that made you think we could be a good match. While I work hard to create an authentic message on my website, I know there's more insight you might want to know before making your final decision.
So for this month's blog, I'm sharing my personal stylist mindset with you - thoughts and mantras I've developed over the past 4 years that influence how I style my clients.
Hopefully, you'll come across something that resonates with you. Thanks for reading!
>> Elaine's Personal Stylist Mindset
1) 0% about me. 100% about you.
When you hire me to be your personal stylist, it's about you 100% of the time.
2) The everyday working mom is my hero, that's you!
My goal isn't to work on tv or on fashion photo shoots or to style celebrities. My ideal client is the everyday, busy mom who is kicking ass at work, commuting to the city, keeping it together at home, and feeling frustrated with her current style situation.
3) You deserve it.
A working mom who is thriving in her job and managing a family life deserves to love her wardrobe.
4) Trends are a guideline.
I don't follow Fashion Week or read Vogue because I don't really care. I keep an eye out for practical trends but it's more important to me that you feel fresh and modern versus trendy.
5) High & Low
I will not ask you to spend more money than you are comfortable with. Since I am not earning a commission on your purchases, I can freely give you my honest opinion because it makes no difference whether you purchase the $1000 IRO moto jacket or the $200 faux leather version by BlankNYC.
6) When we shop, my intentions are different.
Nowadays, everyone is a personal stylist. At Bloomingdale's and Nordstrom, you can make an appointment with one of their personal stylists for free. If you go to an in-home trunk show for CABI, you'll see one of their personal stylists.
So how am I different? Because I visit you at home and I take the time to get to know you and your style needs. I see your closet and get an idea for what you have, what you're missing, and how much you're comfortable spending. When I shop for you, I do it strategically to fill in your wardrobe gaps versus with the intention of getting you to buy as much as possible.
7) Appropriately sexy.
I believe that a woman deserves to feel sexy! Not in a tacky, too much cleavage kind of way, but in a classy way that's age appropriate and right for the occasion.
8) Style should be fun, not serious.
Style rules need not apply! While I take my job seriously, I make sure that the styling experience is fun. I understand that shopping may feel stressful for you. My job is to make it easy.
9) Comfort is key.
I know you want to feel comfortable in your clothes and I agree. I don't want to feel awkward or forced in my wardrobe either!
10) Less is more.
It might surprise you to learn that I have a tiny closet and I love it! Having too many options is overwhelming - especially in the mornings as you're rushing to catch the train. Instead, I believe in the right choices and a curated wardrobe.
