This season, the romper and I fell in love. It took me a while to connect with this trend but now, I'm officially devoted! Several seasons ago, I started out with one romper cover-up for the beach and then the next season, I bought a casual one for everyday lounging. I liked the look but felt unsure about how age appropriate the style was and whether or not I could pull it off.
This season, I went fully committed and have purchased several rompers for various occasions, including one for my twins' upcoming Middle School graduation. Normally I wear lots of dresses right now and it's been fun to mix it up with this chic one-piece style.
Why the change of heart? It was simply a mindset shift and feeling ready for something fresh!
Rompers aren't for everyone because for starters, having to get completely undressed every time you go to the bathroom can be a deal breaker. Also, there's the struggle of looking too much like your teenage daughter. But if you can get over it and find one that suits your age and lifestyle, the romper is fun, flirty and perfect for the summer! And as an extra bonus, it's an easy 30 second outfit - put it on, throw on some sandals, and voila`, you're ready to go!
Romper style tips if you're over 40:
- Inseam. Go for a longer short length.
- Rise. Make sure the shorts aren't pulling in the front. (Or back, for that matter!)
- Avoid cutesy. Go for chic and sophisticated instead.
- Fabric. Avoid cheap fabrics that don't lay well on your body.
- Neckline. Look for rompers with a V / U or off the shoulder neck line for a more flattering fit.
- Go light on accessories. Wearing a romper in your 40s is statement enough! Keep everything else simple.
If you're ready to give this summer staple a try, here are some of my favorite styles ranging from daytime casual to cocktail party appropriate.
Have a fun summer and stay cool in your rompers. It's going up to 80 degrees today and you can guess what I'll be wearing!
